Hi,

The simple way to fix this would be to boot into safe mode and use the administrator account to get into the system and fix the problems. If the account you use is the administrator account or if the administrator account is password protected ( it usually isn't ) Then you can download the Trinity rescue kit to a different computer and use that to reset the password to blank or whatever you want. Here is a link to the free download and how to use it

I knew somebody spent three days sitting in front of a Windows login screen - not knowing what to do because he didn't know the password,

I clicked ENTER and he was logged on. There was no passwordI Purchased a laptop (garage sale-$50) w/ windows xp. Everything WAS working fine until I changed the user...?
Look for a restore point before the change and resetI Purchased a laptop (garage sale-$50) w/ windows xp. Everything WAS working fine until I changed the user...?
There are several ways around that, probably the best thing to do considering its a used computer is to just reformat the entire hard drive. This will wipe everything out of it, including the password and reset everything as is to the day it was new. The bad thing is you probably didnt get a reformat/recovery disc with it did you? No big deal, you can usually order them from the manufacturer or maybe even online on ebay or elsewhere.
