hi...i've Dell inspiron 1525 laptop...i first installed kaspersky interney security beta version...nw i want to change and for a change i uninstall kaspersky nd even delete all the files in registry(regedit)....now when i start installation of mcafee or any other anti virus it states that some anti virus is already installed....remove it before installing this product.....

He changed something in the computer registry and... ?
When he logged into the computer, it starts up like normal. He sees the background image and the mouse is working, but there are no icons. If someone can tell me how to access the registry, I can solve it from there. When I use the Windows Task Manager to create a new task and i type in regedit and I click OK to create a new task, nothing happens.

There is a way to change the admins password from command prompt.
First go to Start, Run, Type cmd.
When your in command prompt type, net user. It will show you the admins user name. Type net user (the admins user name here) *
It will ask you to type a new password. Type your new password but no stars, circles or letters will show up when you type, that's fine. Just make sure you type it correctly because you can't verify it.
If you can't get to command prompt try this. Go to notepad, type command.com. File, Save As... run.bat on your desktop.

C drive problem?
hey guys my computer HD crashed a while ago and i sent it to be repaired and they installed a 320gb one BUT it was under H: not C: so i searched on the net and saw how to change H to C it said for me to:

Step 2) Clean up your pc. Remove programs you don't use via the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. In Vista, you remove programs by clicking Programs and Features in the Control Panel. If you are unsure of a particular program, you can check it against a list of offenders here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.
Clean your hard drive of unnecessary files using CCleaner here: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/...
Save to your desktop, install it, then run the cleaner. Simple, yet it will free up tons of space on your hard drive. While you have the program open, run the Registry Checker as well. This will fix invalid registry entries safely. Note that you should run CCleaner for ALL accounts on your pc.
Step 3) Create a new System Restore point. Click Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt; Accessories%26gt;System Tools%26gt;System Restore. Create a restore point. Now delete all but this most recent restore point. Click Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt;Accessories%26gt; System Tools%26gt;Disk Cleanup. Click More Options tab, and then under System Restore, click Clean up. Click Yes to remove all but the most recent restore point. Click OK, click Yes, and then click OK.
Step 4) Now let's start to get rid of those nasties. Download the following programs to your Desktop. You should then install each one, but don't run them yet. Patience...patience.

I know this seems like overkill, but until someone can come up with one program that can detect everything in the wild, we need to use programs from several reputable sources.
Step 5) Use them safely. Once these programs are installed on your pc, their effectiveness may be negated by running scans normally. You need to reboot your pc into Safe Mode. Shut down your pc, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the Safe Mode with Networking option, which loads all of the above files and drivers and the essential services and drivers to start networking, and press Enter. If Windows launches before you can choose a safe mode, restart your computer and try again. Now it's time to start each program you installed and run scans. First, open Ad-Aware, update to the latest signatures, and run a full system scan. Delete any malware found, close the program and move on to AVG Anti-Spyware. Again, update, run complete scan, and delete the baddies. Do the same for Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware. When you are finished, restart the computer normally.
Step 6) Clean up and protect. I would recommend leaving AVG and Ad-Aware on your system, and delete the other two. These anti-spyware programs do not conflict and offer good future protection. If you happen to like the interface of the others, then by all means keep the ones you want, just so long as you have at least one solid stand-alone on your system. Uninstall the others via Add/Remove in the Control Panel.
Step 7) Not done yet. We've taken care of the spyware, but there still may be viruses and trojans lurking on your pc. If there is an anti-virus program running on your pc, shut it down. Yes, you read right, end the program. We need to run a few online scans that may conflict with the anti-virus installed. Go to Trend Micro: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/... to download and run their free online scanner. Take whatever action the scanner tells you for any virus found. Finally, do the same with the Panda Online ActiveScan : http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ac
Restart your computer.
Step 8) Peace at last. Make sure your anti-virus program of choice is running again and is up-to-date. If you do not have one, I suggest AVG Free Antivirus here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/ or Avast 4 Home:

This procedure will remove MOST malware. However, it may not catch some really nasty buggers. If you've followed all the steps and still believe you have something not right on your pc, you need some extra help. Install, run and save a logfile which you may post on one of the forums listed on that same page as above. There are some pretty good replies here. I once got a trojan horse on my computer by not fully realizing that my Norton Antivirus did not work well with the windows firewall protection.
Since I did not have a lot of data on my box that was all that important, I basically wiped my hard drive. I reformated it or restored it to the original factory spec.
Then when I reloaded my anti virus software I made sure I had all of my settings in control pannel set in accordance with the antivirus software I was using.
I reloaded my programs I wanted, and I was careful to make sure that any updates from MS or Norton were at my descretion and not automatic.
Now further probs since.

Step 4) Now let's start to get rid of those nasties. Download the following programs to your Desktop. You should then install each one, but don't run them yet. Patience...patience.

I know this seems like overkill, but until someone can come up with one program that can detect everything in the wild, we need to use programs from several reputable sources.
Step 5) Use them safely. Once these programs are installed on your pc, their effectiveness may be negated by running scans normally. You need to reboot your pc into Safe Mode. Shut down your pc, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the Safe Mode with Networking option, which loads all of the above files and drivers and the essential services and drivers to start networking, and press Enter. If Windows launches before you can choose a safe mode, restart your computer and try again. Now it's time to start each program you installed and run scans. First, open Ad-Aware, update to the latest signatures, and run a full system scan. Delete any malware found, close the program and move on to AVG Anti-Spyware. Again, update, run complete scan, and delete the baddies. Do the same for Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware. When you are finished, restart the computer normally.
Step 6) Clean up and protect. I would recommend leaving AVG and Ad-Aware on your system, and delete the other two. These anti-spyware programs do not conflict and offer good future protection. If you happen to like the interface of the others, then by all means keep the ones you want, just so long as you have at least one solid stand-alone on your system. Uninstall the others via Add/Remove in the Control Panel.
Step 7) Not done yet. We've taken care of the spyware, but there still may be viruses and trojans lurking on your pc. If there is an anti-virus program running on your pc, shut it down. Yes, you read right, end the program. We need to run a few online scans that may conflict with the anti-virus installed. Go to Trend Micro: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/... to download and run their free online scanner. Take whatever action the scanner tells you for any virus found. Finally, do the same with the Panda Online ActiveScan : http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ac
Restart your computer.
Step 8) Peace at last. Make sure your anti-virus program of choice is running again and is up-to-date. If you do not have one, I suggest AVG Free Antivirus here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/ or Avast 4 Home:

This procedure will remove MOST malware. However, it may not catch some really nasty buggers. If you've followed all the steps and still believe you have something not right on your pc, you need some extra help. Install, run and save a logfile which you may post on one of the forums listed on that same page as above. Some kind soul will then come along and examine your logfile and give you recommendations in order to wipe any remaining buggers away.

There are some pretty good replies here. I once got a trojan horse on my computer by not fully realizing that my Norton Antivirus did not work well with the windows firewall protection.
Since I did not have a lot of data on my box that was all that important, I basically wiped my hard drive. I reformated it or restored it to the original factory spec.
Then when I reloaded my anti virus software I made sure I had all of my settings in control pannel set in accordance with the antivirus software I was using.
I reloaded my programs I wanted, and I was careful to make sure that any updates from MS or Norton were at my descretion and not automatic.

I had the same problem when I replaced my motherboard without formatting my boot disk. When you first Validate Windows, Windows logs the hardware installed on the computer at activation, and if a certain amount of it is changed, it will deactivate your copy of Windows. The only way to reactive Windows online is if the original hardware is replaced. Since it sounds like you encountered and error that caused your hardware to not be correctly recognized, you will most likely have to reactivate by phone. When you click Activate Windows, it should give you an option to Activate Phone. It will give you a phone number and a registration number, just call the number and when prompted key in the registration. Then, it will give you a code which you can use to activate Windows without having to connect to the internet.
***IF THAT DOESN'T WORK***
Use explorer.exe to navigate to C:\Windows\System32, and find cmd.exe. If using Vista, Run cmd as an Administrator (right click -%26gt; Run as Administrator). In the command prompt type %26quot;slmgr -rearm%26quot;. Give it a second and then it should prompt you that your computer is rearmed. You will now have full functionality of Windows for 120 days . How do you force/fix the resolution of a laptop screen?
After coming out of sleep one day my laptop's screen resolution was changed from its native 1280x800 to 1024x768, and it is impossible for me to change it back. I have tried to change it via display settings, powerstrip, ati catalyst control center, regedit, flashing the bios, updating my drivers, scanning for viruses, and updating windows.
The problem is that my computer does not recognize that it can go up to 1280x800 anymore, as almost everything states that my system maxes out at 1024x768 - powerstrip does say though that my max resolution is 1280x800, but it will not allow me to use that setting.

hey, im making a program that automatically refreshes a webpage, among many other things, only annoying thing is that every time it refreshes, i hear a clicking sound.
ive figured out that the registry key for the click sound is

if i change the value from

to any other path it simply stops making the click sound, but i want to be able to code it for users so they dont have to use regedit

Why is "My Documents" opening every 4 minutes on its own?
Just like the title said, My Documents has been opening randomly for the past hour or so. Why is this happening? I have not downloading anything, and I have made 0 significant changes to my computer. I tried an regedit solution but it didn't work. I don't understand how this could be happening I simply have not done anything, i have checked the comp for viruses (nothing was found). When I modify msconfig, i get error message saying access denied, and all my windows services were disabled?
I deleted .Net from my computer, which is itself a user. Now it seems that my administrator account may not be recognized as an administrator, because anytime I uncheck anything from msconfig startup tab, I get an error message saying Access Is Denied, although it makes the change. Our computer was infected with a Trojan.Vundo virus. Symantec virus scan identified this virus and during a typical full system scan supposedly removed the virus. However, we continued to receive a popup message from the Symantec system saying a Trojan.Vundo virus was detected and has been removed.
After repeatedly getting this message, we went to the Symantec website and found a Trojan.Vundo removal tool. We downloaded the tool and ran it per the instructions. The tool said it removed the virus. Unfortunately, after a while the same Symantec message popped up saying a Trojan.Vundo virus was detected and has been removed.
We then went to the Symantec website and found the instructions for manual removal of the Trojan.Vundo virus. We followed the instructions, which included disable system restore, update virus definitions, restart the computer in safe mode, scan for and delete the infected files and reverse changes made to the registry using the regedit command. We did all of these items, although the items we were told to look for in the registry did not exist.
After about three days with no indication of the virus, the same Symantec message popped up saying a Trojan.Vundo virus was detected and has been removed.
Technicians at a local Compusa suggested the only way to delete the virus may be to do a full system restore. We are looking for suggestions on how to delete this virus permanently from our computer without having to do a full system restore and losing all of our programs and data.We need help removing a Trojan.Vundo virus. But I want to be able to block access to the registry editor in the default account, so that they cannot accidentally make any harmful changes.
I want to have an account for me that will give me unlimited access to the entire system for backing up their files, system changes, maintenance etc. But I also want the kids to have just enough access so that they will be able to install programs and any hardware (i.e. memory sticks) for school work. Is there a way to completely customise the default account setup so that all new accounts are based on it, but leave me the access I need?

I wonder if anyone can help me with a very annoying problem.

ok, i ran malwarebytes quick scan, and deleted those viruses.
i would do full scan, but it lasts up to 5 hours.

I'm trying to get my Line-in to play through my desktops speakers!
They are currently muted and my speaker properties currently don't have an un-mute option (common Vista bug...was so easy on XP).
I plugged a stereo jack from my xbox360 into the back of my new desktop with windows VISTA.
Windows vista is able to detect sound coming in, but does not play it through my speakers.
So far ive:
-tested the stereo jack in my laptop, with windows XP and it worked perfectly.
-doulbed checked to make sure everything is unmuted.
-used windows vista sound recorder to record input sound...i was able to play it after.
This is what my speaker properties SHOULD look like:

In Windows XP (it may still happen in Vista, but I haven't yet observed it), I remember that, for empty memory card slots, the drive icon in My Computer would be washed out. If I would put a card into that drive, the icon would appear in full color. In the system Registry (or in Disk Management or anywhere else), is there a way to set this up? (in regedit, I am looking at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\DriveIco?) How can I fix my game's resolution?

To be specific, I have connected a 22%26quot; Horizon (LG) 2206sw lcd monitor onto an older computer (with a nvidia FX5200 graphic card) via dsub-15 (VGA) connector.
My problem is that i cannot set the native resolution (1680x1050) but only other resolutions.
I have tried with powerstrip and multires and even modifying with regedit those values.. no effect. Maybe i am doing something wrong

I am currently under attack by a stupid but smart, threatening virus.
I have a little experience on deleting viruses WITHOUT the help of anti viruses but now I am facing a stronger, faster and whatever-you-can-call-it virus......... I need help!!!!
I can not identify the name of the virus, it's like a ghost virus because every time I insert the usb flash drive and looks at the hidden files and folders using WINRAR.... ( as we know it copies itself to removable flash drives), the virus (together with the autorun.inf) changes it's name every time I delete it...
About the HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.....
It doesn't change the written registry in the regedit...
It hides the hidden files by blinking the desktop I don't know how but it happens...
Another is that when I open any anti-virus (Liike kaspersky, NOD32 etc.), the virus closes them instantly (like I saw in the task manager every tijme i open the anti virus software, its process appears for like 5 seconds anddisappearssAgainn!!!!!! )

reboot in safe mode, run the anti virus, run your pc cleaner then reboot again.
if you can reboot in safe mode with networking, much better, reboot on that, update your anti virus, then scan. update your pc cleaner too. then clean your pc.

viruses is a tough subject...hmmm...first, if u cant manuver cuz everything is slow or screwed up..then try booting in safemode by pressing f8 when restarting..that should give u the speed to dl or run ur anti-virus...avg is a decent anti-virus that is free with live updates...but if u have the money invest in a better 1...also ccleaner is a free cleaner that will dump all unwanted crap like temp internet files..history..caches...cookies...where most viruses lurk anyways..unless u dl'ed something which then it'll be in ur program files...or registry keys..to access regkeys go to start menu and type regedit in search bar...viruses are best deleted manually...but u have to know where they are located/address....if u cant delete the virus becuz of admin priveledges or what ever...press alt,ctrl,and delete at the same time to access the task manager...then go to the processes tab and find ur host...for instance av2009 a rouge antivirus...click on that and end process...then go back and try to delete or uninstall the viral program....if all else fails dl a program called hijackthis...it is also free and very strong..so be very careful what u delete becuz u might need it...hjt brings up everything when u run the scan...so dont just delete everything it brought up...u got pick what u want deleted...ok...gl and i hope this helped u get rid of that annoying crap....and if all else fail u can always delete everything and completely reinstall windows...but thats a last resort..8DHeLp! Download the program %26quot;Unlocker%26quot;. It can delete files even when being used by another proccess. Try deleting the virus itself, if you can find it, and delete the other viruses it had made. I had never tried this before, but you could give it a shot.HeLp! viruses is a tough subject...hmmm...first, if u cant manuver cuz everything is slow or screwed up..then try booting in safemode by pressing f8 when restarting..that should give u the speed to dl or run ur anti-virus...avg is a decent anti-virus that is free with live updates...but if u have the money invest in a better 1...also ccleaner is a free cleaner that will dump all unwanted crap like temp internet files..history..caches...cookies...where most viruses lurk anyways..unless u dl'ed something which then it'll be in ur program files...or registry keys..to access regkeys go to start menu and type regedit in search bar...viruses are best deleted manually...but u have to know where they are located/address....if u cant delete the virus becuz of admin priveledges or what ever...press alt,ctrl,and delete at the same time to access the task manager...then go to the processes tab and find ur host...for instance av2009 a rouge antivirus...click on that and end process...then go back and try to delete or uninstall the viral program....if all else fails dl a program called hijackthis...it is also free and very strong..so be very careful what u delete becuz u might need it...hjt brings up everything when u run the scan...so dont just delete everything it brought up...u got pick what u want deleted...ok...gl and i hope this helped u get rid of that annoying crap....and if all else fail u can always delete everything and completely reinstall windows...but thats a last resort..8DHeLp! Download the program %26quot;Unlocker%26quot;. It can delete files even when being used by another proccess. Try deleting the virus itself, if you can find it, and delete the other viruses it had made. I had never tried this before, but you could give it a shot.HeLp! I tried to open a .exe file and changed it to open with ms word, now its trying to open EVERY .exe with word and isn't working, I've tried to use run %26gt; command to go to the regedit but it's a .exe so won't open.
