He changed something in the computer registry and... ?

When he logged into the computer, it starts up like normal. He sees the background image and the mouse is working, but there are no icons. If someone can tell me how to access the registry, I can solve it from there. When I use the Windows Task Manager to create a new task and i type in regedit and I click OK to create a new task, nothing happens.

Thanks. He changed something in the computer registry and... ?

Win XP or Vista Admin pasword recovery from limited.?

Hi, i need to know how to get the password for the admin acount from a limited acount on windows XP or VISTA. I cant change, or remove it so this is kind of a delicate situation :P is there a way to do this in Regedit or DOS?Win XP or Vista Admin pasword recovery from limited.?
There is a way to change the admins password from command prompt.

First go to Start, Run, Type cmd.

When your in command prompt type, net user. It will show you the admins user name. Type net user (the admins user name here) *

It will ask you to type a new password. Type your new password but no stars, circles or letters will show up when you type, that's fine. Just make sure you type it correctly because you can't verify it.

If you can't get to command prompt try this. Go to notepad, type command.com. File, Save As... run.bat on your desktop.

Then open run.bat from your desktop.

That should change your password.

  • How to make modification in registry using C language?

for eg. to make a exe file run at system startup. to change the icon of an application . I dont know more about regedit. So if know anything please answer me.How to make modification in registry using C language?
Um, forgive my dumb question, but have you downloaded the Platform SDK from Microsoft's website? You'll need it because it has a reference for all of the main Windows functions.

Look up the RegOpenKeyEx() function and it's related functions. There should be some sample code provided in the reference guide too.

If you want to run a program when Windows starts up, you put a file name in the

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|Software|Microsoft|? register key.

Regedit is a registry editor that allows you to manually edit registry keys. Regedit can also export or import registry entries.

By the way, another way to get a program to run when Windows starts is to copy the program file (or create and copy a short-cut to the program) and put it in your 'startup' folder. How to make modification in registry using C language?
You can also get API documentation for these functions as you need it from the URL below.

    C drive problem?

hey guys my computer HD crashed a while ago and i sent it to be repaired and they installed a 320gb one BUT it was under H: not C: so i searched on the net and saw how to change H to C it said for me to:

    1.Start Regedit.exe

2.Go to the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevic?br>
3.Find the drive letter you want to change to. Look for %26quot;\DosDevices\C:%26quot;.

4.Right-click \DosDevices\C:, and then click Rename.

5.Rename it to an unused drive letter %26quot;\DosDevices\Z:%26quot;.

6.Look for %26quot;\DosDevices\H:,Right-click \DosDevices\H:, and then click Rename.

7.Rename it to the appropriate drive letter %26quot;\DosDevices\C:%26quot;.

8.Click the value for \DosDevices\Z:, click Rename, and then name it back to %26quot;\DosDevices\H:%26quot;.

    9.restart the computer

so i did and now when i start the computer it loads ok but then when it comes to the Welcome screen it just stays like that (u can seethe mouse n thats it ALT+CTRL +DEL dosnt work)

how can i fix it without sending it to the repairer.C drive problem?
Just change it back to H Drive.C drive problem?
You typically aren't allowed to change the drive letter of your system-drive because the system is locating your critical files on that drive. I'm surprised it didn't crash when you first changed it. :-)

Buy a cheap new drive, install it with your other drive, install Windows on it and use your original for storage. My system drive is F:\, I live with it.C drive problem?
You can NOT change the drive letter of the system drive. There are thousands of registry entries pointing to it, and most of them can not be changed in regedit as doing so would trash the system. This is exactly what you have now done. You need to re-install from scratch.C drive problem?
Well i have a similar problem to this... sort of. My C drive is actually I drive and my computer operates as normal with no issues whatsoever to do with the drive letter.... after all the drive letter is just a name for a location. If you can not open windows try to run windows in DOS. run the Regedit.exe and see if you can undo what you did... just be happy with the new drive letter... on the plus side hackers will look for Cdrive and find nothing if you stick with H drive :)

M not sure if this works, I've tried this before and has worked for me... Backup up your registry files, so in case you encounter problems, you can easily revert back to original settings.

Open your Registry (regedit). Navigate through \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\

    Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Unins?br>

Try to look for a %26quot;folder%26quot; with the name of the software/company of the one you're trying to remove and delete.

-- OR (if you don't see the company name/program name from the %26quot;folders%26quot;) --

You may notice a lot of items there with the name {123ABC-GF4121-ETC-ETC} (or folders with unique id for names -- you can't miss 'em coz there's plenty). Look through each of these %26quot;folders%26quot;, and through the right-hand pane you see find the softwares associated with the ones you can't remove from the list (in Add/Remove Programs). Usually a program is associated with one of this folders..

Hope this works for you... Coz it really is annoying to see Programs listed there when it has already been removed. There are some programs I can%26039;t remove. Anyone know how to fix it?

Best Wishes.HELP... There is a very dangerous virus in my computer. What can I do?
    Used with permission from NumberSix6

    Printing this would be helpful

Step 1) DON'T PANIC! Take a deep breath and go grab a cup of your favorite beverage. This may take awhile.

Step 2) Clean up your pc. Remove programs you don't use via the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. In Vista, you remove programs by clicking Programs and Features in the Control Panel. If you are unsure of a particular program, you can check it against a list of offenders here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.

Clean your hard drive of unnecessary files using CCleaner here: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/...

Save to your desktop, install it, then run the cleaner. Simple, yet it will free up tons of space on your hard drive. While you have the program open, run the Registry Checker as well. This will fix invalid registry entries safely. Note that you should run CCleaner for ALL accounts on your pc.

Step 3) Create a new System Restore point. Click Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt; Accessories%26gt;System Tools%26gt;System Restore. Create a restore point. Now delete all but this most recent restore point. Click Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt;Accessories%26gt; System Tools%26gt;Disk Cleanup. Click More Options tab, and then under System Restore, click Clean up. Click Yes to remove all but the most recent restore point. Click OK, click Yes, and then click OK.

Step 4) Now let's start to get rid of those nasties. Download the following programs to your Desktop. You should then install each one, but don't run them yet. Patience...patience.

    Lavasoft's Ad-Aware from here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_a

    AVG Anti-Spyware from here:

    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/...

Spybot Search and Destroy from here:

    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl

    SUPERAntiSpyware from here:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/...

I know this seems like overkill, but until someone can come up with one program that can detect everything in the wild, we need to use programs from several reputable sources.

Step 5) Use them safely. Once these programs are installed on your pc, their effectiveness may be negated by running scans normally. You need to reboot your pc into Safe Mode. Shut down your pc, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.

Use the arrow keys to highlight the Safe Mode with Networking option, which loads all of the above files and drivers and the essential services and drivers to start networking, and press Enter. If Windows launches before you can choose a safe mode, restart your computer and try again. Now it's time to start each program you installed and run scans. First, open Ad-Aware, update to the latest signatures, and run a full system scan. Delete any malware found, close the program and move on to AVG Anti-Spyware. Again, update, run complete scan, and delete the baddies. Do the same for Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware. When you are finished, restart the computer normally.

Step 6) Clean up and protect. I would recommend leaving AVG and Ad-Aware on your system, and delete the other two. These anti-spyware programs do not conflict and offer good future protection. If you happen to like the interface of the others, then by all means keep the ones you want, just so long as you have at least one solid stand-alone on your system. Uninstall the others via Add/Remove in the Control Panel.

Step 7) Not done yet. We've taken care of the spyware, but there still may be viruses and trojans lurking on your pc. If there is an anti-virus program running on your pc, shut it down. Yes, you read right, end the program. We need to run a few online scans that may conflict with the anti-virus installed. Go to Trend Micro: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/... to download and run their free online scanner. Take whatever action the scanner tells you for any virus found. Finally, do the same with the Panda Online ActiveScan : http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ac

    Restart your computer.

Step 8) Peace at last. Make sure your anti-virus program of choice is running again and is up-to-date. If you do not have one, I suggest AVG Free Antivirus here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/ or Avast 4 Home:

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-

Be sure you have at least one of the anti-spyware programs running, and also make sure you have a good firewall. PC Tools Firewall Plus is free and works on XP and Vista: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/... , as does WinPatrol 2007:

    http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html..

This procedure will remove MOST malware. However, it may not catch some really nasty buggers. If you've followed all the steps and still believe you have something not right on your pc, you need some extra help. Go here: http://www.tomcoyote.org/hijackthis... to download a program called HijackThis. It examines certain key areas of the Registry and Hard Drive and lists their contents. Install, run and save a logfile which you may post on one of the forums listed on that same page as above. Some kind soul will then come along and examine your logfile and give you recommendations in order to wipe any remaining buggers away.

Please email me with comments, suggestions, and errors. If you like it, feel free to pass it on to other infected folks.

There are some pretty good replies here. I once got a trojan horse on my computer by not fully realizing that my Norton Antivirus did not work well with the windows firewall protection.

Since I did not have a lot of data on my box that was all that important, I basically wiped my hard drive. I reformated it or restored it to the original factory spec.

Then when I reloaded my anti virus software I made sure I had all of my settings in control pannel set in accordance with the antivirus software I was using.

I reloaded my programs I wanted, and I was careful to make sure that any updates from MS or Norton were at my descretion and not automatic.

    Fixing A Windows Error.?

Ok, i have asked many questions and i always get a eithier spammer or noob who is only looking for easy points. I really need your help, i truly do becuase this computer is irreplaceable, Ok allow me to explain my issue and see if you can help please:

I have also tried changing explorer.exe to explorer1.exe in my shell using regedit, and no luck, had the same problem, i have done a deep search for malware and found 6 things and fixed them, using windows malware finder, i have tried everything but i hope one of you guys or girls knows the awnser to this problem, also i do not have any backups or restores, on windows and i have tried installing windows xp, but i get a grey text option which doesnt allow me, also my computer is a Acer Aspire 5515, and i have plenty of ram, and etc, my computer also doesnt search the disk when booting, if someone could help there, that would be sweet if you dont know the awnser to the above, thanks and please only post if you know of something that could help.... Thanks..Fixing A Windows Error.?
I had the same problem when I replaced my motherboard without formatting my boot disk. When you first Validate Windows, Windows logs the hardware installed on the computer at activation, and if a certain amount of it is changed, it will deactivate your copy of Windows. The only way to reactive Windows online is if the original hardware is replaced. Since it sounds like you encountered and error that caused your hardware to not be correctly recognized, you will most likely have to reactivate by phone. When you click Activate Windows, it should give you an option to Activate Phone. It will give you a phone number and a registration number, just call the number and when prompted key in the registration. Then, it will give you a code which you can use to activate Windows without having to connect to the internet.

    ***IF THAT DOESN'T WORK***

Use explorer.exe to navigate to C:\Windows\System32, and find cmd.exe. If using Vista, Run cmd as an Administrator (right click -%26gt; Run as Administrator). In the command prompt type %26quot;slmgr -rearm%26quot;. Give it a second and then it should prompt you that your computer is rearmed. You will now have full functionality of Windows for 120 days . However it wont be activated. But hopefully at this point you will be able to use the Online Activation method. Hope that helps.Fixing A Windows Error.?
just out of curiosity Wat happens when u try to boot in safe mode? tapping F8 while the computer boots will bring up the boot menu select safe mode ( just in case you didnt know). Also wat came with your Computer a Windows CD or a %26quot;restore%26quot; drive on the computer usually drive D:? IF you did do a re-install its NOT true that you would not lose everything you will lose everything in your %26quot;my documents%26quot; folder since that folder is part of windows what you would need to do is when asked where u want to install windows you would type in something like c:\windows2 and then once u boot into your %26quot;new%26quot; windows search around the C:\Windows Folder and backup all your files and then do a format of the hard drive BUT you said it would not let you do a re-install so how r u trying to re-install? by booting from the xp cd?

This usually happens if you have added / removed significant hardware from your computer.

If this is a legitimate copy of the OS, you can call Microsoft Support and they will walk you through activation.

That, or you can run through the re-install and choose to not reformat.

How do you force/fix the resolution of a laptop screen?

After coming out of sleep one day my laptop's screen resolution was changed from its native 1280x800 to 1024x768, and it is impossible for me to change it back. I have tried to change it via display settings, powerstrip, ati catalyst control center, regedit, flashing the bios, updating my drivers, scanning for viruses, and updating windows.

The problem is that my computer does not recognize that it can go up to 1280x800 anymore, as almost everything states that my system maxes out at 1024x768 - powerstrip does say though that my max resolution is 1280x800, but it will not allow me to use that setting.

Please try running your computer in safe mode. U can delete it under the environment.

By the way, you can try this tool which I am using. It can remove computer problems just via a snapshot. It works like this. When your pc works well, take snapshots for your system. Later while the system has problems, such as virus infecting, crash, you just need to choose a snapshot and reboot your pc. In 20s, your system will be back to the healthy state as the chosen snapshot records. And you can save the important files to the healthy system.

Hey guys, I need some help. Actually, I tend to mess with 'regedit' and I guess I screwed up pretty bad this time. I can't log into my user account, therefore I cannot reverse the changes. I have been starting up the computer differently (safe mode, most recent config, etc.) but it still hasn't been working. So does anyone have any idea what I can do?How do I fix my computer, It actually has a problem logging into user accounts.?

If you can help then please do.Windows 7 Help. For Anyone With Any Know-How In Windows 7.?
You have to delete the user account and recreate it otherwise it keep the same name in your profile even if you change your user name.Windows 7 Help. For Anyone With Any Know-How In Windows 7.?
    1. Multi-touch in Win 7

With touch technology becoming the latest trend after Apple檚 revolutionary multi-touch iPhone, Windows 7 has multi-touch for all the supported hardware. HP Touchsmart series is one of them.

    2. Aero Peek

Aero Peek allows Win 7 users to instantly make all the opened windows transparent. So let say, you want to see the weather on Windows 7 sidebar Gadget, this will be very useful.

    3. New Taskbar

Windows 7 desktop will look different now because of the new taskbar. You can now reorder the opened Window buttons. It has Jump Lists feature which will allow you to access common programs very easily. And you can see the full screen preview before switching to a window.

As you can see above, Quick Launch bar and taskbar are merged together in Windows 7.

    4. Games

Along with old Windows Vista games, Win 7 will have online version of Checkers, Spades and Backgammon. If you remember, recently there was a new robot game Tinker on Vista. This was a part of Vista Ultimate.

    5. Media Center

Win 7 comes with enhanced Media Center experience. It will have Internet TV which will telecast MSN channels by default and will have a desktop sidebar gadget for the same too.

    6. NetBook Edition

Netbooks are the light weight portable laptops used for browsing, email etc. It seems that by this year end we檒l see Netbooks by every major Brand like HP, Dell, Sony etc. Windows 7, apart from Ultimate Edition and Business edition will also have Netbook Edition. Though, of course it檒l be a stripped down version.

    7. Performance and User Friendliness

Windows 7 will tremendously reduce the time to install an app. Also, now Windows will be less annoying with very less UAC prompt. For developers also, Win7 will reduce the time taken for developing Windows app.

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

    1.1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

2.1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

3.16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

4.DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

    Vb.net registry editing?

hey, im making a program that automatically refreshes a webpage, among many other things, only annoying thing is that every time it refreshes, i hear a clicking sound.

ive figured out that the registry key for the click sound is

    currentuser\AppEvents\Schemes

    \Apps\Explorer\Navigating\.Current

if i change the value from

    C:\Windows\media\Windows Navigation Start.wav

to any other path it simply stops making the click sound, but i want to be able to code it for users so they dont have to use regedit

i just cant figure out how to change it though, any advice?Vb.net registry editing?
Colanth has good advice - you need to be careful with what you change. If possible make backups of the key values.

But, in the spirit of learning here is some code to help:

    Dim regKey As RegistryKey

    Dim ver As Decimal

    regKey = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey(%26quot;Softwa?True)

    regKey.SetValue(%26quot;AppName%26quot;, %26quot;MyRegApp%26quot;)

    ver = regKey.GetValue(%26quot;Version%26quot;, 0.0)

    If ver %26lt; 1.1 Then

    regKey.SetValue(%26quot;Version%26quot;, 1.1)

    End If

    regKey.Close()Vb.net registry editing?

  • Why is "My Documents" opening every 4 minutes on its own?

Just like the title said, My Documents has been opening randomly for the past hour or so. Why is this happening? I have not downloading anything, and I have made 0 significant changes to my computer. I tried an regedit solution but it didn't work. I don't understand how this could be happening I simply have not done anything, i have checked the comp for viruses (nothing was found). I cannot find a solution anywhere online for this. Any ways to fix thisWhy is %26quot;My Documents%26quot; opening every 4 minutes on its own?
I'd check the task scheduler for something that cycles every four minutes. You may need Administrator privileges to delete it.

    In Windows XP:

    1. Click the Start-%26gt;Control Panel menu item.

    2. Click the Performance and Maintenance link.

    3. Click Scheduled Tasks.

In Windows Vista (possibly W7 also):

    1. Click the Start-%26gt;Control Panel menu item.

    2. Click System and Maintenance.

    3. Under Administrative tools, click Schedule Tasks.

    4. On the left, select Task Scheduler Library.

    no way to do it

You can change the password on windows xp using the software at

When I modify msconfig, i get error message saying access denied, and all my windows services were disabled?

I deleted .Net from my computer, which is itself a user. Now it seems that my administrator account may not be recognized as an administrator, because anytime I uncheck anything from msconfig startup tab, I get an error message saying Access Is Denied, although it makes the change. The bad part is that it also sets ALL of my windows services to %26quot;Disabled%26quot; anytime I uncheck anything from msconfig startup tab. I then have to go through each one and set them back to Automatic. How do I fix this problem? I've tried checking my permissions in regedit and giving each user complete access. I'm also ran the security configurations from the mmc. When I modify msconfig, i get error message saying access denied, and all my windows services were disabled?
reinstall xpWhen I modify msconfig, i get error message saying access denied, and all my windows services were disabled?
As administrator you need to change your password, sign off and sign back on again with the new password.

Then you should be accepted as administrator. When I modify msconfig, i get error message saying access denied, and all my windows services were disabled?
I am sure that was a virus. I have similar problem like that in the past.

You need the latest anti virus application and virus definition. Restart and enter Safe mode. Then clean up your computer from viruses. When I modify msconfig, i get error message saying access denied, and all my windows services were disabled?
Reboot your computer into safemode F8

Choose start in safe mode with networking using the up arrow

    Choose the operating system

You should see an administrator account there

run / msconfig / boot.ini tab and check all boot paths

    follow the instructions

go to www.bitdefender.com and run an online virus scan while in safe mode.

Other than that, I would reinstall the xp operating system, but do not choose clean install, when it discovers that there is already and operating system on the c drive...choose the install anyway option then repair. Keep files and folder option. It will repair the file system and leave the files and folders intact.

Back up you important files first

  • We need help removing a Trojan.Vundo virus. Any suggestions?

Our computer was infected with a Trojan.Vundo virus. Symantec virus scan identified this virus and during a typical full system scan supposedly removed the virus. However, we continued to receive a popup message from the Symantec system saying a Trojan.Vundo virus was detected and has been removed.

After repeatedly getting this message, we went to the Symantec website and found a Trojan.Vundo removal tool. We downloaded the tool and ran it per the instructions. The tool said it removed the virus. Unfortunately, after a while the same Symantec message popped up saying a Trojan.Vundo virus was detected and has been removed.

We then went to the Symantec website and found the instructions for manual removal of the Trojan.Vundo virus. We followed the instructions, which included disable system restore, update virus definitions, restart the computer in safe mode, scan for and delete the infected files and reverse changes made to the registry using the regedit command. We did all of these items, although the items we were told to look for in the registry did not exist.

After about three days with no indication of the virus, the same Symantec message popped up saying a Trojan.Vundo virus was detected and has been removed.

Technicians at a local Compusa suggested the only way to delete the virus may be to do a full system restore. We are looking for suggestions on how to delete this virus permanently from our computer without having to do a full system restore and losing all of our programs and data.We need help removing a Trojan.Vundo virus. Block access to regedit in Windows XP Home SP1?

This might be a geeky question, but I檒l ask it anyway. I want to upgrade a PC from Windows 98 to Windows XP. I檝e reinstalled XP a few times on my own computer, so that檚 not the issue. It檚 one that my cousin檚 kids use when they are at their grandmothers. But I want to be able to block access to the registry editor in the default account, so that they cannot accidentally make any harmful changes.

I want to have an account for me that will give me unlimited access to the entire system for backing up their files, system changes, maintenance etc. But I also want the kids to have just enough access so that they will be able to install programs and any hardware (i.e. memory sticks) for school work. -which one would i use from this list:http://support.alienware.com/Support_Pages/Restricted_Pages/driver_downloads_processed.aspx?os=WV%26amp;cat=1%26amp;manu=%26amp;item=

(using the information from my system information...im not familiar with motherboard drivers)

The current solution for people with the same problem is

    Usually done like this:

    1. Right click on volume icon in system tray

    2. Select %26quot;Sounds%26quot;

    3. Select %26quot;Playback%26quot; tab

    4. Double Click on %26quot;Speakers%26quot;

    5. Select %26quot;Levels%26quot;

    6. Click the %26quot;Input Monitor%26quot; button to un-mute it.

    7. Adjust volume on input device and on speakers.

Unfortuantivley in my case i have no %26quot;Input Monitor button%26quot;!

    I then found this:

%26quot;I HAVE A SIGMA AUDIO TEL AND WIN VISTA HOME BASIC..

AND THE %26quot;EnableInputMonitor entry%26quot; WASN'T THERE SO YOU MUST CREATE IT LIKE THIS:

I have a sigma audio tel and win vista home basic....and the %26quot;EnableInputMonitor%26quot; entry wasnt there

so i had to create it using these steps:

    1) Open regedit (Start-%26gt;Run, type regedit)

    2) Navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\

    SYSTEM\

    ControlSet001\

    Control\

    Class\

    {4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\

    0000\

    Settings\

    filter\

    SpeakerHp\

    3) Create a new Binary Value

    4) Give it the name EnableInputMonitor

    5) Set it's value to 01

    6) Restart your machine

    7) Open your Playback Devices (right click on volume control icon in system tray, select Playback Devices)

    8) Open the Speakers/Headphones

    9) Go to the levels tab

    10) Unmute the input monitor%26quot;

I followed the path listed in step 2 but when i opended %26quot;0000%26quot; there was no settings...

A picture of my regedit at %26quot;0000%26quot;:

    http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/6898/registrymp2.jpg

I tried just putting a %26quot;EnableInputMonitor%26quot; into the 0000 but nothing changed.

No clue if this will help but i found this in the registry aswell:

How to reset Registry Editor to defaults?

I made some tweaks in Registry Editor by going to run --%26gt; regedit and since then my computer has been a little buggy. I don't remember all the changes I made and/or what they were originally so I was wondering if it was possible to restore the Registry Editor settings to default somehow, or if there was a program that could do it... or something. Thanks for your help! How to reset Registry Editor to defaults?
Editing the registry is very dangerous. If you are going to do it you should save the hive you are editing to a backup file first. If you did not do this, then your only chance is a system restore to a date before you made the changes. You cannot as someone else suggested simply insert some magical default values. How to reset Registry Editor to defaults?

Yes, ask microsoft for a default registry file. Then update the registry with it.

How do I change Windows drive icons?

In Windows XP (it may still happen in Vista, but I haven't yet observed it), I remember that, for empty memory card slots, the drive icon in My Computer would be washed out. If I would put a card into that drive, the icon would appear in full color. In the system Registry (or in Disk Management or anywhere else), is there a way to set this up? (in regedit, I am looking at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\DriveIco?) This way, I'll have Icon A appear when there's nothing in the drive, and Icon B appear when I put a card in the drive. Thanks for the help!

NOTE: I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. The Registry key I mentioned early SEEMS to work exactly as it did in Windows XP, but I could be wrong.

ANOTHER NOTE: I am planning to use this on drives that do not neccesarily appear in Disk Management (ex: network memory card drives). If your method absolutely must use Disk Management and/or not work with network drives, then do post it, but otherwise try to avoid this kind of problem.

A third note (of slightly less significance): I used this article from PC Magazine to learn how to set up icons in the registry. It does not address my issue with having two icons for a drive. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,202How do I change Windows drive icons?
To change the icon displayed within explorer for a drive requires changes to the windows registry.

    1. Create (if it does not already exist) the registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ DriveIcons\ X\ DefaultIcon

where 'X' is the drive letter of the drive for which you wish to change the drive icon.

    2. Change the key's default value to hold the fully qualified name of the icon file (e.g. 'c:\myicons\cdrive.ico').

If the file contains more than one icon then follow it with a comma and the zero-based index of the icon (e.g. 'c:\myicons\mylib.dll,2').

    3. To see the effect restart Windows - although, depending on the version of windows simply refreshing the window might be sufficient.

I am currently under attack by a stupid but smart, threatening virus.

I have a little experience on deleting viruses WITHOUT the help of anti viruses but now I am facing a stronger, faster and whatever-you-can-call-it virus......... I need help!!!!

I can not identify the name of the virus, it's like a ghost virus because every time I insert the usb flash drive and looks at the hidden files and folders using WINRAR.... ( as we know it copies itself to removable flash drives), the virus (together with the autorun.inf) changes it's name every time I delete it...

About the HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.....

It doesn't change the written registry in the regedit...

It hides the hidden files by blinking the desktop I don't know how but it happens...

Another is that when I open any anti-virus (Liike kaspersky, NOD32 etc.), the virus closes them instantly (like I saw in the task manager every tijme i open the anti virus software, its process appears for like 5 seconds anddisappearssAgainn!!!!!! )

If you need more details please tell me so i can add for more

another problem caused by this stupid virus is....

when i install the Microsoft office 2007, the virus makes the setup software crazy and disables the installation process.

Another question is how can i delete the c:/sccfgs.sys hacker-file???

reboot in safe mode, run the anti virus, run your pc cleaner then reboot again.

if you can reboot in safe mode with networking, much better, reboot on that, update your anti virus, then scan. update your pc cleaner too. then clean your pc.

that sounds like the virus that came a couple of weeks ago. AVG had the solution for that and most likely most of the anti virus now. just update your anti virus.

if the anti-virus is not able to do its task then u have to format the drive

viruses is a tough subject...hmmm...first, if u cant manuver cuz everything is slow or screwed up..then try booting in safemode by pressing f8 when restarting..that should give u the speed to dl or run ur anti-virus...avg is a decent anti-virus that is free with live updates...but if u have the money invest in a better 1...also ccleaner is a free cleaner that will dump all unwanted crap like temp internet files..history..caches...cookies...where most viruses lurk anyways..unless u dl'ed something which then it'll be in ur program files...or registry keys..to access regkeys go to start menu and type regedit in search bar...viruses are best deleted manually...but u have to know where they are located/address....if u cant delete the virus becuz of admin priveledges or what ever...press alt, ctrl, and delete at the same time to access the task manager...then go to the processes tab and find ur host...for instance av2009 a rouge antivirus...click on that and end process...then go back and try to delete or uninstall the viral program....if all else fails dl a program called hijackthis...it is also free and very strong..so be very careful what u delete becuz u might need it...hjt brings up everything when u run the scan...so dont just delete everything it brought up...u got pick what u want deleted...ok...gl and i hope this helped u get rid of that annoying crap....and if all else fail u can always delete everything and completely reinstall windows...but thats a last resort..8DHeLp!
